CHENNAI: Passengers booked on a new train that was introduced between Chennai Egmore and Thanjavur had a tough time after the train that started from Egmore did not stop at Mambalam railway station on Sunday. However, railways have not taken action against the loco pilot because it was a rare occurrence.Sources said the driver realised the mistake soon after he crossed station and waited at Tambaram railway station till all passengers boarded. The passengers were brought by a suburban train and the loco pilot did not start the train till all of them boarded," an official said. He said the loco pilot had the list of scheduled stops, speed restrictions, stretches where train should be driven cautiously. "For some reason he missed the Mambalam stop."A majority of outbound trains from Egmore don't have a stop at Mambalam. This might have lead to the mistake, said a source. Only three or four outbound trains stop at Mambalam while all inbound trains stop at the railway station. It was the first day of the service when the loco pilot made the mistake. Uzhavan Express was introduced on September 1. |

Seeking equitable development of all regions of the State, Member of Parliament from Kurupam and Union Minister of Tribal Affairs and Panchayati Raj V. Kishore Chandra Deo outlined a number of issues that would have to be addressed in the event of bifurcation of the State. In a letter to the Antony Committee, which he handed over during his meeting along with other Union Ministers from Seemandhra Region at New Delhi on Tuesday, he demanded that the headquarters of East Coast Railways be located in Visakhapatnam with Vijayawada Division added to it and the South Eastern Railway be shifted to Bubhaneswar as it was unrealistic to have it in Kolkata, which already had Eastern Railways headquarters.“Vishakhapatnam is situated at the centre of the east coast between Kolkata and Chennai. The East Coast Railways Headquarters which should have been located at Vishakhapatnam is unfortunately established at Bhubaneswar. Kolkata has two zonal headquarters – Eastern Railways and South Eastern Railways. While Kolkata is in the eastern part of the country, by no stretch of imagination can Kolkata be said to be any part of the South Eastern Region. The South Eastern Railway Headquarters may be shifted to Bhubaneswar with the Khurda Division attached to it and the East Coast Zonal Headquarters must be shifted to Vishakhapatnam with the addition of Vijayawada Division in lieu of the Khurda Division,” he wrote. |
