JAIPUR: It's time for heritage to be sacrificed at the altar of modernity and convenience. The Jaipur Metro Rail Project - Phase I(B) running through the Walled City would lead to loss of heritage structures. An important landmark of Walled City, Badi and Choti Chaupar would need to be demolished to allow construction of underground Metro station.Asian Development Bank is funding the underground section of this corridor i.e. Phase I(B) from Chandpole to Badi Chaupar, a length of 2.628 km with two underground stations, Choti and Badi Chaupar. "The project calls for dismantling of Badi and Choti Chaupar and its restoration to its original condition. The dismantling and restoration will be under the supervision of Rajasthan's department of archeology and museums and we will ensure that we retain the same look," said N C Goyal CMD JMRC.Historically, the chaupars were outlets for social use with water structures connected by underground aqueducts, supplying numerous sources of drinking water at the street level.Presently, the centre of each chaupar has square enclosures with ornamental fountains. Besides, surface noise from excavating equipment in Choti and Badi Chaupars may pose threats to the structures of Krishna Temple, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal, the report says.

"These were historic water bodies so archaeological excavations are a must before proposing stations. Many cities across the world have done that. So they have interesting archaeological museums in underground stations as part of it. Metro may be feasible but only after exhaustive study and research and excavations plus vibration impact assessment. However, it is safer and better to go for a tram line in a city like Jaipur for public transport," said Shikha Jain, director Devlopment and Research Organisation for Nature, Arts and Heritage.

Phase 1(B) underground section starts from Chandpole gate station, passing through Choti Chaupar and then to end-of-the-line in Badi Chaupar. The underground section will be constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) and partly by cut and cover method for the two remaining stations at Chhoti and Badi Choupar (Chandpole station is already under construction). All three underground stations will be constructed through cut and cover with top-down method.

However , apprehensions loom that the 'Khandas' near the chaupar having old trees and the structure might also get disturbed as the JMRC plans to construct entry and exit points.

"If the two Chaupars are going to be rebuilt, then I hope they will maintain their original look and not try to modernize and beautify them. It is important to maintain their historicity," said Dharmendra Kanwar convener, Jaipur Chapter, Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage Intach.

GUWAHATI, Sept 16 – The Guwahati railway station will have a new look with the Railway authorities lining up a series of projects to boost passenger amenities and give a modern touch to the place as part of a major remodelling exercise.

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials said a vintage MG steam locomotive will be placed in front of the station and escalators will be installed connecting the platforms with the foot overbridge for convenience of passengers.

“The steam engine will be placed in front of the station which is intended to provide a glimpse of the Indian Railways heritage. Besides, as part of beautification drive, two water fountains and a pathway will also be constructed there to give a better ambience,” NFR PRO Nripen Bhattacharya told.

Inside the main station area, escalators will be constructed. “The tender notice process for construction of the escalators has been completed and actual work on ground will start by November,” he said.

The remodelling exercise will also include construction of a second entry gate from the Paltan Bazar side and also a separate VIP entrance to platform number one.

Bhattacharya said that the existing foot over-bridge will be extended from the proposed VIP gate to the parcel siding at platform number seven to facilitate passenger traffic.

In addition, a rickshaw stand would be constructed to ease the congestion outside the main station gate. Besides, a pre paid tax/auto stand will also come in consultation with the State government.

“For better passenger service, a food plaza is proposed to be set up which will be operated by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). In addition, two fast food stalls would also be set up in platform number one and it will be operated by Railway’s department of catering,” he said.

As part of the exercise, a 46×8 metre waiting hall for general second class passengers would be constructed.

For smooth freight service, one additional parcel gate will come up near the DMM office. There are currently two parcel gates – one each in the Paltan Bazar and the Panbazar side. The project also has provision for a trolley path at both ends of the platforms in the station.

            The regular service of T.No.17413 Tirupati – Puducherry (weekly) express will commence ex. Tirupati o­n 21.09.2013 (Saturday) and that of T.No.17414 Puducherry – Tirupati (weekly) express will commence ex. Puducherry o­n 22.09.2013 (Sunday).

            T.No. 17413 will leave Tirupati at 21.35 hrs. o­n Saturdays and arrive Puducherry at 04.30 hrs. o­n Sundays.  T.No.17414 will leave Puducherry at 08.35 hrs. o­n Sundays and arrive Tirupati at 16.00 hrs. the same day.  The composition of the trains will be      8 General Second Class, 1 Second Class-cum-luggage and 1 Second Class-cum- disabled friendly coaches.  The trains will stop at Pakala, Chittoor, Katpadi, Vellore Cantt., Arni Road, Polur, Tiruvannamalai, Tirukkovilur and Villupuram.

पहाटेच्या साखरझोपेत असलेले प्रवाशी. भरधाव गाडीच्या कर्णकर्कश ब्रेकच्या आवाजामुळे खळबळून जागे झाले. आजचा दिवस कदाचित त्यांच्यासाठी शेवटचा ठरला असता. मात्र ट्रॅकमनने सजगता दाखविली आणि मुंबई-अमरावती एक्स्प्रेसचा भीषण अपघात टळला.

समाधान खंडेराव असे ट्रॅकमनचे नाव आहे. समाधान हे शेगाव रेल्वे स्थानकात ट्रॅकमन म्हणून कार्यरत आहेत. त्यांना पारसनजीक असलेल्या मनारखेडच्या छोट्या पुलावर (मोरी) तैनात करण्यात आले होते. रविवारी सांयकाळी ६ ते सोमवारी पहाटे ६ वा‌जतादरम्यान त्यांची ड्युटी होती. रविवारी रात्रभर परिसरात मुसळधार पाऊस झाला. पहाटे पाऊस बंद झाला. सकाळी चार आणि पाच वाजताची गाडी पुलावरून गेली. साडेपाचच्या सुमारास आझाद-हिंद एक्स्प्रेस या पुलावर पोहचली. भरधाव गाडीचे शेवटचे दोनतीन डबे पुलावर असतानाच अचानक पुलाची डाऊन मार्गावरील भिंत कोसळली. गाडी पास झाल्यानंतर समाधान खंडेराव यांनी पुलाची पाहणी केली. तेव्हा भिंत कोसळल्यामुळे सुमारे आठ मीटरपर्यंत रेल्वे रुळाखालील गिट्टी- मातीचा भराव पूर्ण वाहून गेला होता. तसेच रेल्वे रुळ अधांतरी लटकत होते. त्याचवेळी मुंबई-अमरावती एक्स्प्रेस पुलावरून जाण्याची वेळ झाली होती. ट्रॅकमन खंडेराव यांच्याकडे मोबाइल नसल्याने ते तत्काळ अधिकाऱ्यांना संपर्क करू शकत नव्हते. मात्र धोका टाळण्यासाठी त्यांनी रेल्वे प्रशासनाने दिलेले प्रशिक्षणाचा वापर करण्याचा निर्णय घेतला. त्यांनी रेल्वे रुळावरून शेगावकडे धाव घेतली. सुमारे ७०० मीटर अंतरावर त्यांनी ' फटाका ' रेल्वे रुळावर बसविला. लाल बावटा हलवून चालकाचे लक्ष वेधले. अपेक्षेप्रमाणे गाडीचे इंजिन फटाक्यावरून जाताच तो फुटला आणि चालक सावध झाले. इमरजन्सी ब्रेक लावला. ट्रॅकमनने चालक आणि गार्डला संभाव्य धोक्याची सूचना दिली. तिघांनी खचलेल्या रेल्वे रुळाची पाहणी केली. तेव्हा गाडी थांबली नसती तर मोठी दुर्घटना झाली असती असे मत चालकाने व्यक्त केले.

जीटीमधून धूर निघाल्याने खळबळ

रेल्वेस्थानकावर उभ्या असलेल्या जीटी एक्स्प्रेसच्या एका बोगीखालून अचानक धूर निघू लागल्यामुळे सोमवारी खळबळ उडाली. ही घटना दुपारी १२.२५ वाजता प्लॅटफॉर्म क्र. १ वर घडली. जीटी एक्सप्रेस या प्लॅटफॉर्मवर उभी असतानाच एस-१० या बोगीच्या खालच्या भागातून धूर निघू लागला. त्यामुळे गाडीला आग लागली असे वाटून प्रवाशी सैरावैरा पळू लागले. गाडीत बसलेले प्रवासीही उतरू लागले. त्यामुळे आरपीएफ व जीआरपीनेही घटनास्थळी धाव घेतली. रेल्वेच्या तांत्रिक विभागाचे कर्मचारीही आले. त्यांनी ही बोगी दुरुस्त केली. त्यानंतर १२.५५ वाजता गाडी पुढील प्रवासासाठी रवाना झाली.

झांसी। सोमवार को निवाड़ी स्टेशन पर बनी दोनों रेल लाइनें ब्लाक होने के कारण इस सेक्शन पर दौड़ रही चंबल एक्सप्रेस को वापस बरुआसागर स्टेशन लाना पड़ा। बताया गया कि सोमवार की सुबह मथुरा से हावड़ा जाने वाली गाड़ी संख्या 12178 अप चंबल एक्सप्रेस बरुआसागर स्टेशन से जैसे ही आगे बढ़ी तो सूचना मिली कि निवाड़ी स्टेशन की मेन लाइन पर मालगाड़ी का इंजन फेल हो गया है। पहले से ही लूप लाइन पर खड़ी बांदा- झांसी पैसेंजर की वजह से दोनों ही लाइनें ब्लाक हो गईं हैं। बरुआसागर से तकरीबन एक किलोमीटर निवाड़ी की ओर बढ़ चुकी चंबल एक्सप्रेस को सिगनल डाउन कर रोका गया और वापस लौटाया गया। अचानक पीछे की ओर गाड़ी को जाता देख यात्री सकते में आ गए। किसी अप्रिय घटना की आशंका से उनमें भय व्याप्त हो गया। हालांकि, बाद में वस्तुस्थिति की जानकारी मिलने पर उन्होंने राहत की सांस ली। इसके बाद निवाड़ी स्टेशन से पैसेंजर को चलाकर बरुआसागर तक लाया गया। लाइन खाली होने पर चंबल एक्सप्रेस को गंतव्य तक बढ़ाया गया। इस कारण ट्रेन करीब एक घंटे विलंबित रही।

Rs 5 Lakh Penalty Realized From Ticketless Travellers in Fortress Check conducted at Vijayawada Railway Station

The Ticket checking staff of South Central Railway, under the direct supervision of Shri Gnaneswara Rao, Chief Commercial Manager/Catering & Passenger Service, Shri. R. Venkateswara Rao, Dy. Chief Commercial Manager (General) and Shri N.V.Satyanarayana, Sr. Divisional Commercial Manager/Vijayawada, conducted a massive Fortress Check at Vijayawada Railway Station o­n 13th Sept 2013. During the checks, all possible escape routes in the station were sealed with Security Personnel.

For carrying out the check, 117 Ticket checking staff, 20 Railway Protection Force, 31 Government Railway Police personnel, 22 Bharat Scouts & Guides, were mobilized and pressed into action. Sixty four important Express trains and 51 Passenger trains were thoroughly checked at Vijayawada station without leaving any scope for the errants to escape.

As a result of the surprise check, a total of 1466 cases were detected for committing ticketless / irregular travel.  An amount of Rs 5.08 Lakh was realized towards penalty from these persons. The effect of the fortress check resulted in rise of sale of journey tickets across ticket counters by 15% and the sale of platform ticket by 33%.

Poor patronage for Train Number 22475/22476 Coimbatore — Bikaner — Coimbatore Weekly AC Superfast Express is proving to be a cause for concern. The train was introduced last year.

Within a few months of its introduction, a pantry car was attached to the train which runs for close to 48 hours spread over two nights and two and a half days.

However, the train with nine AC three-tier coaches and four AC two-tier coaches with a capacity to accommodate nearly 750-odd passengers had been recording only 55 to 60 per cent occupancy and this resulted in the pantry car being withdrawn on August 24, 2013.

Important connectivity

Rail activist S. Ravi said the train passed through Northern Kerala, Mangalore, Udipi, Goa, Ratnagiri (closer to Mumbai), Ahemedabad and Jodhpur and with such poor patronage, the train now seemed to run the risk of either being cancelled or getting extended up to Erode or Salem.

In that eventuality, Coimbatore would lose an important connectivity via Konkan Railway with Goa, Rajasthan, Gujarat and other places, he said.

Gearing up

Meanwhile, the Salem Division officials are gearing up for the flagging off ceremony of the Coimbatore — Rameswaram — Coimbatore Weekly Express (Train No 16617/18) from Coimbatore Junction on Tuesday (September 17) at 7.45 p.m. Conceding the demand of the Railway Struggle Committee, an announcement was made in the Union Railway Budget presented in February for the introduction of a weekly train.

Utilising the idle rakes (locomotive and coaches) of the Coimbatore — Rajkot — Coimbatore Weekly express, the weekly train service to Rameswaram from Coimbatore on Tuesdays and from Rameswaram on Wednesdays is being introduced.
