Principal Special Judge for CBI cases, Visakhapatnam, G. Anupama Chakravarthy on Friday convicted Vadlamannati Ranga Raju, the then Sr. Traffic Inspector of Accounts (TIA) in the Senior DFM’s Office, ECoR, Visakhapatnam, for abusing his official position and sentenced him to undergo simple imprisonment of six years.The accused had committed theft of manually cancelled tickets and presented the same for getting refund against which refunds were already granted. The accused was sent to the Central Prison. Ranga Raju used to visit General Booking Office and Passenger Reservation System for checking cancelled tickets. He used to check cancelled tickets manually with the refund statement and used to mark them with blue pencil at GBO.He used to steal some of the AC Class tickets and present them at the PRS for refund.The staff manning the counters could not resist as he was a senior officer. Many of them had no inkling that Section TIA may be resorting to malpractice and they used to oblige the accused and pay the amount to him.CBI Deputy Inspector General G. Nageswara Rao said a case was registered against the accused on August 10, 2006 under the Sections 120-B, 420 of the IPC and Section13(1)(d) read with 13(2) of PC Act, 1988 against Ranga Raju and some other unknown persons.The accused while functioning as public servant during April, 2006 to July, 2006, cheated ECoR in the matter of getting refunds against the cancelled tickets in 244 instances.The accused had committed theft of manually cancelled tickets and presented the same for getting refund |
