It is for the first time in recent decades that under pressure from civil society groups (Praja being the chief among them), the Government bowed to listen to the woes of commuters.To cut the long story short, the latest RITES feasibility report suggests that the rail system along four corridors could be integrated into a commuter railway network. These are: Kengeri-Ramanagaram 32 km, Baiyappanahalli-Hosur 41 km, Yeshwanthpur-Tumkur 64 km and Yelahanka-Doddaballapur 24 km.If one were to look into the existing modes of transportation within this region, it is found that people commute the distances by a variety of vehicles.The pattern configured by Wilbur Smith Associates (WSA) reveals that public transport caters to 30 per cent of the commuters’ needs, although walking still takes the largest chunk of 34 per cent. Two-wheelers take 21.4 per cent share while cars/vans share 4.5 per cent with a similar share being covered by bicycles.Maxicabs and taxis fulfil the needs of another one per cent, equally shared between the two.
