Cadre of Communist Party of India (CPI) observed fast at 10 places in Tiruvarur district on Wednesday urging the Central government and Southern Railway to implement the gauge conversion in the Tiruvarur-Thiruthuriapoondi-Karaikudi sector and Kodiakarai-Thiruthuraipoondi sector as per the assurance given to the people.G.Palanisamy, former MLA and State assistant secretary of the party, inaugurated the fast in front of the municipal office at Thiruthuraipoondi. K. Ulaganathan, Thiruthuraipoondi MLA (CPI), said that the project though announced by Southern Railway, had been put in cold storage for the past one year. The fast gained support from PMK, MDMK, traders’ organisations, advocates organisations, and builders associations. At Manali, R.Gnanamohan, former panchayat union chairman, led the agitation. R. Mutharasan, State general secretary of Vivasaya Thozhilalargal Sangam, said efforts are made to bypass this line and lay a new line between Mannargudi and Pattukottai, which is not necessary. “However, we welcome new lines between Pattukottai, Thanjavur and Ariyalur.” | ||
