Due to bumper harvest of Onion crop in Gujarat, Railway minister Suresh Prabhu ordered railways to operate two additional freight trains so that distribution can be done as quickly as possible throughout the country. Till date railway has already loaded 15 such rakes and two rakes per day are being loaded at Mahuva Junction and Vartej station. Both these stations comes under Bhavnagar division of western railway. Approximately 41000 tonnes of onion have already been transported to various cities of North Eastern and North India. By transporting onion on such fast pace Railway wants to set an example which will also benefit farmers directly as they will get good price for this perishable commodity. Addition of additional rakes has increased the carrying capacity of onions by 50 percent. As Gujarat delivers 6% of total onion production in the country, such step by railway to deploy additional rakes so that onions can be transported as fast as possible is worth mentioning. |
