Safety, convenience and affordable fare is what passengers look for while travelling between cities. This became realistic for the people, traders and workers in Salem with the extension of Mainline Electrical Multiple Units (MEMU) service between Coimbatore and Erode to Salem from July 11.Frequent road accidents, widening of National Highways from Avinashi to Coimbatore, extra time in covering the distance and increased ticket fare in buses have encouraged people to use the new service by over 550 passengers everyday.Except on Sundays, the train arrives at Salem Junction at 12.45 p.m. and would start its journey towards Coimbatore Junction at 1.40 p.m. Moreover, the train service would serve as a connecting train for passengers to catch up with Bangalore – Katpadi passenger and Bangalore – Nagore passenger train at the junction.A resident of Old Suramangalam said that travelling to the industrial city would take half-a-day in bus and one has to spend around Rs. 100 for one-way fare. But now travelling in both the directions can be completed at less than Rs. 50. “Economical and safety is what we look for,” added the passenger.Though a few passengers complain that the time of operation of service is not suitable for workers and students, railway officials said that operational time could not be changed as the train already runs as Palakkad Town - Coimbatore Passenger and again continue its service as Coimbatore - Salem Passenger. Officials also said that Sunday service is also not possible as maintenance work has to be carried out. |
