The mass departure from Gujarat of people from the North-East has ebbed after three days. On Monday, the day of Eid, no one from the North-East living in the state was seen fleeing home for safety. As the exodus had come to an end, the Western Railways too stopped adding extra coaches to trains bound for the northeastern states. Talking to DNA, a spokesperson of the Western Railways said that the passenger traffic to these states had returned to normal. Earlier, on Saturday, the Western Railways had added five additional coaches to the Guwahati-bound Gandhidham-Kamakhya Express. Sources in the railways said that the waiting list for trains to the North-East had also dropped to normal.Passengers from Gandhidham, Vadodara, Surat and Ahmedabad were also using the Howrah Express which leaves daily from the Ahmedabad railway station, Porbandar-Howrah Express, Muzaffarpur Express and Jansadharan Express to get out of Gujarat. The exodus had started in response to reports of attacks on people from the North-East in Hyderabad and Bangalore. These attacks, it was alleged, were in retaliation for the death of a large number of Muslims in the recently communal riots in Assam. |
