A truck with an empty trailer went off the railway overbridge at Karuppur on the Salem to Bengaluru National Highway at around 9.15pm on Monday, with a portion of it landing on the railway track below it.Omalur Police said that the incident happened when the truck that was heading towards Omalur from Salem went out of control. It knocked against the side wall and went off the bridge. While the name of the truck driver was not known, the Police said that he was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. “His condition is stable. Nobody else was injured in the incident”, they added.“The rear of the truck went off the road and the tail end of the open trailer landed on the track below. The front of the truck got stuck on top of the overbridge”, Police source said. The Police and Railway officials said that there was minor damage to the track while the electric cables were not affected in the incident.The repair works on the track began around 9.45pm and were completed in three hours. “Movement of trains resumed at 12.45am. Five trains from Salem were delayed due to this fault, while trains bound to Salem were not affected as the works were carried out on time”, an official said.Bombay to Kanyakumari Express that should have crossed the damaged portion shortly after the incident was stopped well in advance. Four other trains were stopped on the way. The Blue Mountain Express was stopped at Coimbatore and the delay in its start was made up in the running time, the official said.The Divisional Railway Manager (Salem Division) Sujatha Jayaraj and the head of various departments supervised the repair works. | ||
