Kochi: Along with the reconstruction work of North Railway Overbridge (ROB), the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has speeded up the construction of the new Salim Rajan ROB near KSRTC depot.
    Though the Metro authority will be able to complete the works of North ROB by August, they will complete the works of the new ROB only by January next year.
    The DMRC spokesperson has informed that they have completed about 90% work of the ROB on the KSRTC side. This overbridge will connect Rajaji Road with Salim Rajan Road and is expected to ease traffic congestion when the Metro construction begins.
    “On this side we have to complete works related to landing area and approach road. DMRC has begun the filling works,” he said. Since it is a new bridge, the girders are being built at the construction site.
    For North ROB, girders are built at Manapattiparambu and are transported to the construction site. DMRC expects to complete works on the other side of the ROB that goes above the railway track and ends at the Salim Rajan Road by December.
    “We will require the permission of the railways to carry out works above the track. But this will be in the final stage. We hope that the bridge can be opened for the public by January 2013,” the spokesperson added.
    DMRC also stated that it would complete the work of North ROB ahead of schedule. Though it earlier planned to complete reconstruction activities by September, it has now stated that work would wind up by August.
    Once the reconstructed side-bays are opened for traffic, the main bridge through which vehicles move at present, would be demolished to facilitate construction of the main project. It is pointed out that despite opening the newly constructed side for traffic, two-wheelers and three-wheelers will have to proceed through alternate roads.
