The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) today said its trains had carried a record 2.5 million passengers on August 8, the highest ever ridership figure on its network so far since it started services in 2002. The number of passengers was 25,04,900 on that day, which supassed the previous high of 24,25,897 achieved on July 29 this year, a press release from DMRC said. Of these, 3,60,512 passengers were carried on Line 1 ((Dilshad Garden to Rithala), 8,87,003 on Line 2 (Jahangirpuri to HUDA City Centre), 9,81,252 on Line 3 & 4 (Dwarka Sec-21 to Noida City Centre/Vaishali), 90,669 on Line 5 (Inderlok/Kirti Nagar to Mundka) and 1,85,464 on Line 6 (Central Secretariat to Badarpur). In addition, the ridership of Airport Express link went up from 10,500 to 12,500 on the same day, it said. DMRC also said that, in a major step towards tackling the issue of overcrowding in the trains, it will introduce the first ever eight-coach train on line 3/4 (Dwarka Sector 21 – NOIDA City Centre/ Vaishali) by the end of this month. Two eight-coach trains are currently being tested for commissioning into service. As many as 24 eight-coach trains are currently running on Line 2 (Jahangirpuri – HUDA City Centre) after the introduction of the first such train on December 24 last year.
