Two Diesel locomotives have been successfully converted into electric traction by a team of engineers from Bharat Heavy Electricals and Chittranjan Locomotive Works. According to Railways the total conversion work took 69 days to complete.

Railway converted two Alco locomotive from Diesel to full electric. This has also led in increase in power output by 92%. The output power is now 3730 kW from 1940 kW or 7460 kW for twin unit. Trial of these two locomotives will begin this summer.

Successful conversion of diesel to electric has also prompted railway board to send a memo to general managers of all 17 railway zones asking them to send diesel locomotives to Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi for conversion. 

However some group of railway engineers have questioned the conversion. The main question is on the impact of dynamic abilities of converted engines as it is unnatural for these diesel locomotives to become electric. It must be noted that, Engineering department is yet to assess the abilities of these converted engines.
