A couple escaped with injuries after the car in which they were travelling was rammed by a train at an unmanned level-crossing at Kamban Nagar here on Sunday afternoon. The couple, Vasu (52) and Indira (43), hailing from Deva Nagar, were admitted to the Government General Hospital with injuries.Sources said Vasu, who was driving the car, stopped close to the railway track on seeing the approaching Chennai-Puducherry passenger train around 11.15 am. According to the locals who witnessed the accident, the car was dragged for about 50 metres alongside the track before it fell to the side of the tracks. The unmanned railway crossing had no signal.Residents Vayalveli area rushed to the spot and pulled the couple out of the car, which was completely damaged in the accident.Hospital sources said Indira suffered more injuries, but was out of danger. Vasu was also being treated for bruises. One of the residents told Express that a similar accident occurred at the same level crossing about three months ago. Residents in the area also said the unmanned crossing posed danger to people living in Kamban Nagar, Deva Nagar and Vayalveli areas. They blamed the Railways for not installing a signal to alert the people crossing the line or approaching trains.Locals are afraid to cross the railway line, because trains normally don’t not slow down at this stretch. One does not hear the sound either, said Selvi, a resident of the area. Many cows also died in this stretch, she added. | ||
