The construction of Great Indian Peninsula Railway Offices started in May 1878, designed by F.W. Stevens, a consulting architect and completed in 1888. It was named as Victoria Terminus on Queen’s Jubilee Day in 1887 than in 1996 it was renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. This building was later enlisted as World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its architectural splendour in 2004. In 2013 a postal stamp was released during Centenary celebrations of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Building. This building has also been selected as 10 iconic places in India for its tourist potential in 2016. This building was designed in Gothic Style. It is a C shaped building planned symmetrically about the east west axis. The crowning point of this building is the central dome with a colossal 16 feet 6 inchs high Statue symbolising Progress. Initially 6 platforms were built in 1929 costing about 10.4 lakh rupees and gradually station was remodelled periodically and now it has 18 platforms. |
