Central railway has asked railway ministry 15 MEMU trains to replace 11 diesel hauled passenger trains. The idea behind this is that Central Railway wants to speed up trains on some routes where patronage is high. This will allow more trips between the stations. MEMU trains are like Mumbai local trains but with narrower coach and are significantly faster than diesel hauled passengers. Central Railway will also set up a MEMU car shed. An official said that running trains on electrical traction is 50% cheaper for coaching traffic and is 47% cheaper for freight traffic. Plans to have MEMU is a part of mission raftaar of railways. When it comes to major railway networks, Indian railways is one of the slowest in world with average speed hovering around 45kmph for passenger trains and 24kmph for freight trains. |
