The Police Department is gearing up to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the district to strengthen security. The Mandya police have forwarded a plan in this regard it to the State police headquarters, and are waiting for approval.“Under the police modernisation plan, we have decided to install CCTV cameras at different parts of the district in a phased manner,” Koushalendra Kumar, Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu .

“We will install CCTVs at 20 places in Mandya city and a good number of surveillance cameras at different parts of the district,” Mr. Kumar said. According to another police officer at the State police headquarters in Bangalore, “The Mandya police will install the CCTVs at Mandya bus-stand, railway station, V.V. Road, Holalu Circle, and offices of the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police.”Besides, the Police Department has also decided to install surveillance cameras at major tourist destinations in the district.“We will install surveillance cameras at Sangama, Mekedatu, Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple, and Tipu's palace and armoury in Srirangapatna,” said a senior police official.

A source told The Hindu that the initiative was aimed at improving security in Mandya. The department would install such cameras at traffic intersections, crowded places and vital installations in Maddur, Malavalli and other taluks. The police hoped to check terror strikes and crime.

The department would set up a control room in Mandya. “The cameras will be highly advanced, with features such as capturing high resolution pictures even at night. The footage will be stored for at least 30 days,” a police officer said.
