Eastern Railway has achieved a substantial growth in its freight and passenger traffic with total earnings of Rs 1898.78 crore during first four months of this fiscal (April-July 2012). Eastern Railway set a record in freight traffic carrying 20.463 million tonne during April-July, surpassing the proportionate target set up by Railway Board of 19.540 million tonne for the period.

During the corresponding period of last year, Eastern Railway had carried 17.80 million tonne of freight traffic. Thus, there was an increase of 14.92 per cent this year over the previous year. Among the total loading this year, coal alone amounted to 14.066 million tonne as against 11.550 million tonne during the previous year. General goods amounted to 6.397 million tonne this year.1483.85 Earnings from freight traffic also increased to Rs.1483.85 crores during April-July 2012 as against Rs.1135.05 crores during the corresponding period of last year. Thus, there was an increase of 30.72 per cent this year over last year's earning. There was also remarkable achievement in carrying passenger traffic by Eastern Railway during April-July, 2012, with some 39.42 crore commuters, as against 38.11 crore of passengers during April-July, 2011.

It recorded an improvement by 3.43 per cent of passengers this year over last year. From passenger carrying Eastern Railway earned a total of Rs.567.21 crore during April-July 2012 as against Rs.518.42 crores during April-July 2011. Thus, there was an increase by 9.41 per cent this year over last year. The total earning of Eastern Railway increased to Rs.1898.78 crores during April-July 2012 surpassing Rs.1725.19 crore earned during the corresponding months April-July 2011 recording an increase by 10.06 per cent this year over last year.
