Soon Bengaluru and Mangalore will be 90 minutes shorter by train, with the new railway line coming into existence that will connect both cities via Shravanabelagola and Hassan. The project is almost complete and is awaiting clearance from Railway Safety commissioner. This project was sanctioned in 1996-97 and the estimated cost was Rs 1300crore. The project never completed till date due to fund crunch and permission was denied to pass the railway line through Vijay Mallay’s stud farm in Kunegal. Also land acquisition in Ramanagara district posed the biggest hurdle in completion of this project. The 368-km route from Bengaluru will be a 10.5hrs long journey if starting station is Chikkabanavar. Currently the journey from Bengaluru to Mangalore takes 11.45hrs. The new route will also cover significant tourist attractions like Adichunchanagiri Mutt which is near Bala Gangadharanatha Swamiji railway station and Shravanabelagola. |
