South West Railway plans to invest Rs9 crore in an integrated security system (ISS) at city and Yeshwantpur railway stations, according to divisional railway manager Sudanshu Mani.“ISS will have two scanners to check vehicles and two for baggage. Close to 100 cameras will be installed at these stations,’’ Mani said. “Efforts are made to close more than 20 illegal entry points around the city railway station. It is a tough task but we have to do something to end this menace,” he said. However, according to sources, the introduction of ISS at the two stations has been delayed considerably. “The plan was conceptualised in 2009 but it is yet to be implemented. Shortage of security personnel is a reason for the delay. We have only 100 police personnel who are working in three shifts. Sixty are deputed for checking trains when they arrive at the station and other work. We need 250 more policemen to implement ISS effectively.Without recruiting more police personnel, it would be a daunting task to maintain ISS,’’ said a police officer. While two metal detectors at the station have been removed, the existing ones have not been maintained properly. |
