It’s dusty, archaic and eerie with run-down premises. Does that ring a bell?Every Kochi suburban train traveller will know that it is Kalamassery Railway Station.Being part of the industrial belt, it was natural that this station handles more of goods trains than passenger trains. But residents’ associations and trade bodies have for decades been demanding that more passenger trains halt here. It will take the burden off Ernakulam stations. and save people from travelling to the city to catch a train.Apart from a few passenger trains, the station now handles goods trains that bring in cement, steel etc,. Fertilizer from FACT is loaded into trains, for being transported to other States. The Ernakulam area manager of the railways Ashok Kumar said: “The station’s earnings from freight movement must improve to add more amenities. Only then can we look into the possibility of having stops for more trains. The station is currently ranked in the D-category based on earnings. Right now, we do not have plans to halt more trains here.”The station is located 6 km (rail distance) from Aluva, while the Ernakulam Town station is 14 km from Kalamassery. |
