6 | Indian Railways News / EQ facility at Ernakulam restoredon : Apr 10, 2012 - 03:00:06 AM |
KOCHI: The facility to avail the railway emergency quota (EQ) from Ernakulam which was transferred to the divisional headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram last week was restored on Sunday. The decision was announced when the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) and railway board engineer (Electrical, Signalling and Telecom) Khul Bhooshan visited the Ernakulam station to study the possibilities of improving freight traffic, cost cutting measures and safety issues. The EQ facility was shifted on April 5 as the Ernakulam area manager, who is responsible for issuing the EQ tickets, went on a sick leave. But following the protests by railway unions, an assistant commercial manager has now been deployed on temporary basis to deal with the EQ applications. Meanwhile, the DRM rubbished the allegations that the Ernakulam area manager’s post was eliminated and said that unwanted rumours were being spread by the railway staff who had their own agenda. “There have never been plans to eliminate the post. We understand the importance of such a post in Ernakulam. It was only a temporary move,” the DRM said. When asked about the move to withdraw the staff in area manager’s office and his car, the DRM said it was not necessary for the area manager to have a car. Last Edit : Apr 10, 2012 - 14:34:04 PM By |

7 | Indian Railways News / Waltair division of East Coast Rly crosses 50-mt mark in goods trafficon : Apr 10, 2012 - 06:00:05 AM |
VISAKHAPATNAM : The Waltair division of the East Coast Railway has crossed the 50-million tonne mark in cargo-handling for the first time during 2011-12 financial year, according to Mr N. Kashinath, Divisional Railway Manager.Reviewing the performance here on Monday, he said the division had handled goods traffic of 50.80 million tonnes earning Rs 4,054 crore during 2011-12 against 48.27 mt and Rs 3,837.20 crore respectively during the previous financial year (2010-11). He said Waltair division was one of the six divisions in the country which had crossed the 50-million tonne mark. However, he said, in spite of the impressive performance the target of 52 million tonnes in goods traffic could not be achieved by the division due mainly to two main reasons. “The Maoists are active in parts of Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh and they are disrupting the iron ore traffic originating at Bailadilla mines and reaching Visakhapatnam. We have lost at least a million tonnes during the year due to the factor. An additional problem during the year was the 10-day-long rail roko at Jagadalpur, which resulted in the loss of at least a million tonnes more. Otherwise, we could have comfortably reached, and even crossed, the 52-million-tonne mark,” he said. |
