  Indian Railways News  / NEW RAILWAY HOSPITAL AT PERAMBUR; TEMPORARY STOPPAGE FOR EXPRESS TRAINS AT MELNARIYAPPANUR

A new Railway Hospital is being constructed at Perambur in Chennai.  The hospital is coming up in a campus measuring a little over 14 acres.

          The new Railway Hospital will have a separate OPD block and 6 IP blocks.These will be constructed in phases.Upon completion, the hospital will have 45 consulting rooms, 600 beds and 14 operation theatres.         

          Today, the ground floor of the OPD block was inaugurated by Smt. Vijaya Kanth, Financial Commissioner, Railways in the presence of Dr. P.S. Prasad, Director General, Railway Health Services, and Shri. Rakesh Misra, General Manager, Southern Railway.

            Dr. G. Narayanan,Additional GeneralManager, Southern Railway, Shri. S. Vijayakumaran, Chief Administrative Officer, Construction, Southern Railway and Dr. S. Ram Prakash, Chief Medical Director, Southern Railway and other higher railway officials graced the occasion by their presence.

          The hospital, complete in all aspects, is expected to be ready by March, 2016.

TEMPORARY STOPPAGE FOR EXPRESS TRAINS

AT MELNARIYAPPANUR


            In view of the feast at St. Antony’s Church, temporary stoppage of 2 minutes duration has been provided for express trains at Melnariyappanur, between Chinnasalem and Attur in Vriddhachalam – Salem section, as follows.                                                                                                         

          1) Train No.11063 / 11064 Chennai Egmore – Salem – Chennai Egmore express      trains will stop at Melnariyappanur from 11.06.2013 to 14.06.2013.

          2) Train No.16855 Puducherry – Mangalore weekly express will stop at      Melnariyappanur o­n 13.06.2013.

  Indian Railways News  / Mukherjee asks railway probationers to dedicate life and services to nation's cause

A group of 56 probationers of the Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS), Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS) and Indian Railways Service of Stores called on President Pranab Mukherjee at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here on Monday. President Mukherjee, while addressing the probationers, congratulated them on their success in a very difficult competitive examination. He said that they are joining the great task of nation building by serving Indian Railways and they must dedicate their life and services to the cause of this country. President Mukherjee said that the Indian Railways has been a great unifier of this country and they were fortunate to have the opportunity to serve this great organization. Twenty-nine percent of this group of probationers from 17 states were ladies. Also present on the occasion were Chairman, Railway Board and Director General of National Academy of Indian Railways, Vadodara. (ANI)

  Indian Railways News  / Difficult terrain, poor connectivity creating hurdles on Dharm-Sangarh rail tunnel project

JAMMU, June 8: Extremely difficult terrain, remote sites, poor road connectivity and hostile weather conditions are creating hurdles in smooth work on India’s second largest tunnel under Udhampur-Baramulla-Srinagar Rail line project near Sangaldhan in Ramban district.
Notwithstanding all out efforts of the executing agency,  the excavation and allied works on 10.2 kilometre long twin tunnel from Dharamkund near Sangaldhan to Sumbarh in Ramban district is still in initial phase due to mobilization hiccups even after more than eight months since the project was awarded, official sources informed the Excelsior.
Rs 884 crore worth project for this tunnel (T48) has been awarded to Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) Limited, India’s leading infrastructure company, which has also built the Pir Panjal tunnel between Banihal and Qazigund on the rail line.  HCC received the order for construction of T48 tunnel in September-October 2012. It is a repeat order to HCC awarded by IRCON International Limited, which is engaged in constructing the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway line.
Even as the logistic operations were started immediately after the work was allotted to the company, it took months to transport required machinery at the site due to extremely poor road connectivity in this hilly area and no approaching way.
Old bridges en route Dharamkund and Sumbarh were the main constraints in transporting heavy machinery to the site, sources explained and gave example of limited capacity of Dharamkund bridge on Chenab river due to which they were using 50 kilometre longer route via Reasi to reach Sumbarh. “On these old bridges with limited capacity, we are left with no option other than to take some longer route or unload the machinery before crossing them, “sources said.
No road connectivity with the actual site of work was another major problem for which the construction company had to develop kilometres long approach roads through extremely difficult terrain while hostile weather conditions were making the task more complicated. “Due to rainfall, these small and narrow approach roads get blocked thus putting brakes on progress of the ongoing work,” sources said.
When contacted, the HCC Project Manager Sharnappa Yalal said that mobilization of men and machinery at the site was 95 percent complete and the ongoing work is likely to gain pace in coming months.  “Despite all hurdles and hostile conditions, we are hopeful to complete the project within the stipulated time of 60 months,” he claimed.
While excavation work on T48 tunnel has been started from both ends after portal developments at Dharam and Sumbarh, an adit tunnel is being constructed from Kholi, at five kilometre aerial distance from Dharam, to start digging on two more points for speeding up work on actual tunnel, Mr Yalal informed the Excelsior.
So far 240 metre natural tunnel has been dug from Dharamkund end in addition to added tunnel structure of 310 meters while on the Sumbarh side, excavation of natural tunnel is all set to begin as portal developments such as  work on leveling of the entry point and removal of loose rocks are  near completion, he  added.
However, the under construction Kholi adit tunnel is likely to take approximately nine more months to reach the main tunnel alignment point, he further said.

  Indian Railways News  / A facelift for Bijwasan, Anand Vihar railway stations, on King’s Cross’ line

An airspace waiting room right in the centre of the railway station, with trains chugging below, and innovative waiting lounges, are among the passenger advancements the Indian Railways is mulling over at the Anand Vihar and Bijwasan railway stations. With this facelift and more infrastructure development in the offing, the Indian Railways expects to transform the two nondescript stations and bring them up to international standards.Bijwasan and Anand Vihar railway stations are amongst the five chosen stations across the country, which will be developed on the lines of the London King's Cross and Berlin Central station. Habibganj in Madhya Pradesh, Shivaji Nagar in Pune and Chandigarh Railway station are the other stations that will developed on similar lines.At present, Bijwasan station in the Southwest Delhi is only a halt for passenger trains. Railway authorities aim to develop the station into a terminal and built new infrastructure.While Anand Vihar station has been commissioned as a terminal, the station premises will be revamped as per the new plan.The plan to develop world class railway stations was announced in the Rail Budget in 2012. "Although waiting rooms have been built, passengers prefer to wait at the platform or on foot overbridges as they afraid of not being able to hear announcements or get updates inside the waiting hall. As a result waiting rooms are found empty and platforms and foot overbridges congested. A plan is being prepared to built a central airspace waiting hall,"a railway official said.The Indian Railway Station Development Corporation (IRSDC) is finalising the modalities of the innovative waiting lounge. "The foot overbridge will be modified and an additional floor will be added. The first floor might be used for the outgoing travellers. Seating arrangements will be available on both the side at the lower level with air conditioned facilities," a senior official said.The consultant appointed for the Anand Vihar station will be assisted by the architect of the King's Cross station. The authorities will install CCTV cameras to continuously monitor the airspace waiting hall.Further, there would be separate walkways for the incoming and outgoing commuters to ensure minimal congestion. Architecturally designed electronic signages will also be installed at the waiting hall and other premises of the station. Travelators, disabled-friendly escalators and lifts will also be deployed at the station premises. Commercial space would also be available to rent out ATMs, office spaces, the official said.The facilities are expected to be commissioned within two years, the official said.

For the convenience of the rail passengers and to increase the passenger carrying capacity of trains, Northern Railway has decided to augment  the 12428/12427 Anand Vihar- Rewa- Anand Vihar Express Train o­n temporary basis as per the under-mentioned  programme:

The 12428/12427 Anand Vihar- Rewa- Anand Vihar Express Train will be augmented by o­ne Additional A.C. First Class cum A.C. 2 Tier coach (total 18 coaches) with immediate effect upto 31.07.2013 when departing from Anand Vihar T. and from 12.06.2013 to 01.08.2013 when departing from Rewa . The other features like timings, route, stoppages, composition etc. will remain unchanged.
