The Kanyakumari Christian Forum has urged the Southern Railway to operate a fully air-conditioned daily superfast train from Nagercoil to Chennai Egmore via Madurai and Virudhachalam.In a memorandum to Railway Minister C.P. Joshi, forum secretary Sam Manohar said that Kanyakumari district had a high percentage of educated people. Since employment opportunities were limited in the district, a majority of the educated people seek jobs in cities across the country, especially in the State capital Chennai. For travelling between Nagercoil, the district headquarters and Chennai, people prefer train over bus because of the former being comfortable and cost-effective.The two daily trains from this region to Chennai — Kanyakumari Express and Ananthapuri Express — have a good patronage throughout the year.Even the special trains, which were being operated throughout the year between Nagercoil and Chennai, have a good patronage. Hence, getting accommodation in these trains proved to be very difficult. About 200 to 300 people got waitlisted in the Chennai-bound trains every day.
