Passengers had to face hardship in the city on Thursday as the workers of Karnataka State Road Transportation Corporation (KSRTC) stayed off work on Thursday responding to an indefinite strike call by the Joint Committee of the Trade Unions of Karnataka State Road Transport Undertakings. The 98 buses of Shimoga depot, 57 buses of Bhadravathi depot and five buses of Sagar depot remained off the road on Thursday. The KSRTC operates 914 schedules daily from Shimoga bus stand. All the schedules were cancelled owing to the strike. The passengers travelling to places like Bangalore, Mysore and Hubli relied on trains to reach their destinations. The strike had left the local railway station grappling with influx of commuters. The professionals and students who travel daily between Shimoga and Bhadravathi moved in taxis. Some miscreants pelted stones at the Bangalore-bound KSRTC bus near Jedikatte village in Bhadravathi taluk. Police personnel were deployed in large numbers in Shimoga, Bhadravathi and Sagar bus stands to avoid untoward incidents. The transport services from Shimoga to taluk centres like Shikaripur, Sorab, Hosanagar, and Tirthahalli and in rural areas of the district were normal as private buses ply along these routes. The KSRTC bus stands in Shimoga and Bhadravathi cities wore a deserted look following cancellation service on several routes. | ||
