The Thanjavur District Rail Users Association urged Southern Railway to extend the recently-introduced trains 22627/22628 Tiruchirapalli-Tirunelveli intercity express trains to Kumbakonam, for the benefit of commuters of delta districts. In his memorandum to Southern Railway General Manager, Vice President of the Association, a girl stated that the new intercity express trains have not evoked much patronage, where as the existing trains 56821/56822 Mayiladuthurai - Tirunelveli passenger trains enjoyed overwhelming demand. The passenger trains are always overcrowded . Commuters have been demanding an express train connecting the delta districts with the southern districts, he added. He said that the extension of the intercity express to Kumbakonam will immensely benefit commuters of both the central and southern districts. Such an extension will benefit people who travel in large numbers to Madurai, college and university students and people employed in commercial centres like Sivakasi.
