Rajahmundry: A man was arrested on charges of lifting valuables from the commuters in trains and seized 385 gm gold ornaments worth Rs 20 lakh by the railway police.

Government railway police DSP S.V.V. Prasada Rao told newsmen here on Wednesday that they had arrested Gollanki Nagaraju of Peda Gantyada in Visakhapatnam and recovered valuables and the tool used to open suitcases. He said that the culprit was already involved in 10 cases.

The DSP said that Nagaraju along with a gang from Bihar lifted 580 gm gold ornaments from two passengers travelling by second class AC coach of Circar express coming from Chennai to Bhimavaram in last November.

The gang had also lifted 96 gm of gold ornaments from a woman passenger travelling by Lokmanya Tilak express at Bhimavaram on the same day.

He said that the gang members from Bihar were arrested on January 10 and 580 gm of gold ornaments were recovered from them. As Nagaraju was also involved in it, he was arrested at Tanuku on Tuesday.

Mr Prasada Rao explained that the modus operandi of the culprit was to pretend to be reading a newspaper and lift valuables from the suit cases of the commuters while travelling by train.

To keep vigil in trains during night time, they were deploying a head constable and three constables in every train to prevent thefts and alert those who travel on foot board, the DSP said. He said that they were setting up sub-controls at main railway stations to be available to the commuters 24 hours in a day.
