puneetmafia | DMRC plans foot overbridges to link old, new Metro lines on 18 March, 2013 - 04:00 PM
Six of seven transfer stations along the new Mukundpur to Shiv Vihar Metro corridor will not be adjacent to existing stations, so Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is building extra-long foot overbridges for commuters, to help them change lines. The foot overbridges will be paid areas so commuters don't have to exit and re-enter.They are between 70 m and 200 m long and will connect the new line to Karkarduma, Welcome, Mayur Vihar, Rajouri Garden, Netaji Subhash Place and Azadpur Metro stations. A bridge connector is unnecessary at Anand Vihar because the new station is being built next to the old one.At 56 km, Line 7 is the longest in the system and will traverse in a sweeping U-shape through all the present lines and highly congested areas. Construction is supposed to start next year and scheduled to be completed by December 2017"Due to constraints such as inadequate availability of land near the existing stations and the direction of the alignment, it was very difficult to connect the new stations with operational ones," a Metro official said.Metro officials said lifts will be built where necessary. The longest bridge, at 200 m, will be built at Netaji Subhash Place, which is above ground. But the new station for Line 7 will be semi-underground. The second longest bridge, at 197 m, will be built at Azadpur, where the present station is elevated and the new one is underground. The shortest bridge is 70 m long, will be built at Welcome station, where both stations are elevated. As part of a transit-oriented plan and due to spacial restraints, DMRC has decided not to build parking facilities at the stations, only allowing pick-up and drop zones and space for rickshaws and bicycles.
