New Delhi: Despite innumerable security personnel deployed at railway stations across the country, India has been considered ‘a home for crime against women’. Around 200 cases were reported last year including rape, molestation and eve teasing in moving trains. The number of crimes committed against women in trains raised to 210 in 2012 as against 127 cases recorded in 2011, a statement issued by Railway ministry claims. The molestation is a routine affair for women travelling in trains. The numbers have gone up from 72 to 119 in 2012. Four more rape cases registered at the end of the 2012. Earlier, the ministry penned down 3 rape cases in their record. Eve teasing is the most common problem reported in the trains, considered to be the lifeline of common people. Around 18 misbehavior cases in moving train were reported from railways authorities in South Zone. At least 170 people were arrested for crime against women in 2012. The increasing number of cases raise a question on the quality of governance. The ministry earlier had promised to ensure security of women in the trains. The helpline numbers have been displayed in the coaches of trains and the prominent areas of the railway stations. Even though the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel have been deployed in the trains on regular basis, the number of cases involving crime against women have gone up. The steep decline in the security of women by the Indian Railway is still a matter of concern. | ||
