Guwahati/Shillong/ Kolkata : At least three people were injured in Assam and damage to several structures, including a part of the airport and a hospital, reported across the state when a moderate intensity earthquake rocked Assam and parts of North East this evening.Train movement was also regulated for some time after the quake.The earthquake, measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale, jolted the region at 1811 hrs today. It was epicentred at Kampur, in central Assam's Nagaon district.The tremors were felt across Assam, several parts of NE and parts of north Bengal.Three people, including a woman, were injured in different parts of central Assam, the epicentre of the quake.Two of the persons were injured while trying to rush out of their houses, while another was hurt when he jumped off the roof of an under-construction house in panic.A part of an artificial ceiling in the arrival lounge of the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi international airport here was damaged, though no person was injured.Walls in some wards of the NF Railway hospital in the city also reportedly developed cracks. Damage in walls of several other buildings in the city was also reported after the quake.Movement of trains was also regularised immediately after the quake, though it has resumed to normal later.A Northeast Frontier Railway spokesperson told UNI that speed was restricted to 30 km/hour immediately after the quake under the three affected sections - Alipurduar, Rangiya and Lumding.The Tinsukia section of the NFR was not affected by the quake. The trains have now resumed normal speed, he added.This is the fourth quake to have hit parts of NE this month.The region, located in zone V of seismic zone, was jolted on May 1, May 3 and May 5.Sources said the tremor was felt in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar districts, which created a panic among the people in the region. |
