BARNALA/SANGRUR: The Punjab police did not relent in its crackdown started in the wake of "rail roko" call given by 17 farm organizations for Wednesday and made some more preventive arrests on Thursday. Among those taken into preventive custody on Thursday included Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan) state president Joginder Singh Ugrahan, BKU Dakonda district Mansa general secretary Mohinder Dyalpura and many brick kiln labourers at Rampura Phool. The farmers are protesting for reclaiming their forcibly acquired lands and a waiver of their farm loans.Undeterred by the arrests, the farmer organization activists burnt government effigies and blocked road traffic at many places across the state.BKU Ugrahan general secretary Sukhdev Singh Kokri said, "By making arrests and stopping the farmers from holding peaceful protests, the SAD-BJP government has showcased its suppressive face but the farm organizations cannot be scared away by adopting repressive measures." Even the women have not been spared and have been arrested at some places, he said and reiterated their resolve to hold the proposed protests at Bathinda and Amritsar from March 10. If the arrested activists are not released immediately and the farmers not allowed to protest, the struggle would be further intensified at the state level, he added. | ||
