I always wanted to shoot some long-exposure images. When the moon was closest to the earth, I made off to Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi and captured the serene environment.

I took extra time out — a week, really — to take in the beauty of these historic places. To get the perfect shot, I exposed the image for about 25 minutes, getting the perfect shot around 1am in Dhanushkodi.

It was a beautiful sight. There were no people around — just the ocean and a straight stretch of empty road, lit by the moon. You could easily get lost, watching the star trails and the calm ocean.

Both Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi have a lot of history. Sri Lanka is only 18 km from Dhanushkodi. A primary export hub, it was washed away by the 1964 cyclone.

Even now, the ruins of the railway station, church and school can be seen. The best way is to drive all the way from Coimbatore, seeing both towns up close. For a view of the crystal-clear ocean, a visit to Dhanushkodi is a must.
