PUNE: An unclaimed bag at the Shivajinagar railway station waiting room led to panic in the area on Tuesday. The bag was found by the Bomb detection and disposal squad during a routine check being carried out by it at the station. As a safety measure, police immediately evacuated the Shivajinagar railway station and a slum area near the station. A local train was stopped at Khadki even as the crime branch and the anti-terrorism squad swung into action after getting news of the abandoned bag.The tension subsided after four hours when the Bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS) carried out a small blast to open the bag on an open ground near the SSPMS college. The BDDS men found some clothes, medicines, an old telephone, a calculator and a screw in the bag. The case has been handed over to the government railway police (GRP) for further investigations.Additional commissioner of police (south region) Chandrashekhar Daithankar told reporters that the BDDS checks important establishments everyday. "As per their routine, they had gone to the Shivajinagar railway station. While checking the waiting room on platform number 1, they came across the bag," Daithankar said.Daithankar said the dog in the BDDS team gave certain signal to its handler which gave rise to suspicion. When another dog was summoned to the spot, it too gave a similar signal. Then the BDDS decided to get an X-ray machine. "When the bag was checked through the machine, some wires and screws were noticed," Daithankar said. | ||
