The rising mercury has brought respite to railway passengers and Northern Railway officials.With the fog density dropping in the capital, most trains that were delayed or cancelled are now running on schedule.Till last Sunday, around 12 trains were running behind schedule. On the contrary, as many as 65 trains were running late till Monday.Dense fog had severely hit train operations.Due to poor visibility, certain long-distance trains were running late by a day or more.Northern Railway had to cancel 17 trains and partially cancel 23 trains. “There has been a tremendous improvement in the train operations since the density of fog decreased.Visibility on the tracks has improved, enabling trains to run on schedule,” a Northern Railway spokesperson said. Officials said fog is still a problem in many places around Delhi.“Trains from Ambala, Bihar, Agra, Varanasi and Kalka are still facing delays due to fog. With normalisation of weather, trains will run on schedule in these sections,” the spokesperson said.

Temperature rises to 25.2°C:After unusually cold weather earlier this month, the mercury on Saturday soared to 25.2 degree Celsius, making it the warmest day of the year at 5 degrees higher than the average maximum temperature.The temperature rose three notches from Friday, while the minimum temperature remained the same at 7.7 degree Celsius, with no variation from the normal for this time of the year.However, 25.2 degree will be the plateau of the weekend mercury levels as India Meteorological Department officials predicted that the top temperature on Sunday will be 24 degree Celsius, while the low will be around 8 degree Celsius.Shallow fog and mist will be seen in the morning, but a clear sky is expected thereafter.On January 12, 2012, the maximum temperature recorded was closer to the average at 19 degree Celsius and the lowest was 5 degree Celsius.In the first half of the month this year, the temperature hit record-breaking lows and, on an average, was at least 5 degrees cooler than the normal temperature for early January.This was attributed to cold Himalayan winds and overcast skies that have cleared and allowed the sun to shine through.
