Work began for the rail over bridge to be built on an outlay of Rs. 29.12 crore at the busy Thatchanallur manned level crossing here on Wednesday. At the inaugural of the work, which took place amidst incessant drizzle, a team of officials, including Ganesan of Department of Highways, participated. As this busy manned level crossing is closed around 40 times a day whenever passenger and goods trains pass this point, vehicles wait in long queue on both sides causing frequent traffic snarls throughout the day. After prolonged struggle by the residents of Thatchanallur and repeated pleas from the public representatives demanding rail over bridge at Thatchanallur, the State Government, after conducting comprehensive discussion with Southern Railways, formally sanctioned the project, which is likely to be completed within 24 months. The 650 meter-long rail over bridge will be 7.50 meter wide. Provisions will be made in the bridge for walkers’ path and service roads. Accordingly, land adjacent to the existing Thathanallur – Tirunelveli Junction Road are being acquired.Though similar project is also likely to come-up at Kulavanigarpuram manned level crossing, another busy and congested point, a few legal hurdles in land acquisition has delayed the commencement of physical work on the construction of the ‘Y’ shaped rail over bridge. | ||
