irmafia | Rlys struggling as fog plays havoc with train schedules on 27 December, 2012 - 09:00 AM
Even though trains are frequently getting delayed or cancelled due to fog, the proposals of the Railways for the installation of equipment to prevent the same has not proven to be successful. The Ambala Division has been experimenting with equipment to ensure the smooth plying of the trains during fog. However, the trials have not been very successful.During foggy days, a large number of trains in the Ambala Division are affected. Long distance trains especially at times end up being delayed, even by a day. This disrupts the schedule of the passengers. As part of the safety measures during the fog, the trains are driven at a very slow speed in order to prevent accidents. At present there is no technology to inform the driver about the approaching station when visibility reduces due to fog. The age-old method of tying crackers to the tracks is still being used. The Railways has still not been able to install any new technology to handle the problem. In Chandigarh on Wednesday, the schedule of the trains continued to be disrupted. Most of the trains were running behind schedule. Apart from the trains, no flight took off from the Airport for the second consecutive day. A similar situation had prevailed on Tuesday. There was no relief from the cold wave. The day temperature was recorded as 11.4 degrees, while on Tuesday it was 11.1 degrees. With the temperature being 10 degrees below normal, the residents had to bear the chill. The Met Department has predicted the continuation of similar conditions on Wednesday as well. Fog is expected that will reduce the visibility to 200 metres or less. With the situation prevailing in the region, transport facilities are likely to remain disrupted.
