Mumbai: In a bid to improve train operations on suburban, mainline and freight corridors across the railways, a software to help in planning railway time tables and train movement is expected to be installed in Mumbai and Delhi by end of this year.

 

Sources said the software — RAILSYS — will be purchased by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation from a German company.  The software will cost Rs 5 crore, the sources added.  While the exact configuration of the software will be known only after it is handed over to the Corporation, the programme comprises of a railway time table planner, train movement and signal simulator and an editing system that helps plan train operations on a composite railway network.

 

Given the complex nature of suburban railways in Mumbai, the software is likely to come handy to both Central and Western Railways in different scenarios, especially during maintenance and operation blocks or during monsoons, when the administration has prior knowledge of different parameters which are estimated to affect train movement.

 

According to the source, the software will also help in minimising train cancellations by suggesting the optimum train operations in a given situation.  Some of the features of the software include assessing train operations in conditions such as speed restrictions, gauging energy consumption of scheduled services and creating both daily and a long-term timetable.
