Title - Western Railway collects fine of Rs 6.48 crore - The Times of India

AHMEDABAD: The Western railway in its drive to ensure that people only travel on genuine tickets, the western railways continued its drive to catch ticket less travelers.

The western railway conducted regular checks during May, 2012 wherein 1,68,700 cases of ticket less or irregular travel including UN-booked luggage cases were detected. This resulting into a recovery of Rs. 6.48 crore.

Also 1444 cases of illegal transfer of reserved tickets were detected and an amount of Rs.11,70,608 /- was realized. Officials said that in these cases it was found that the tickets were booked in some other name, while the person traveling was some other person.

Officials said that now with the railways making it mandatory to carry photo identity card, such cases are on the rise.

During the same period, 948 beggars and unauthorized hawkers were apprehended, fined and evicted from Railway premises. Out of these 948, 13 were sent to jail.

During this month, 170 checks were conducted against touts and other anti-social elements. As a result, 411 persons were apprehended and got prosecuted under various sections of Railways Act.
