Title - Waste from railway station polluting the Bharathapuzha
Posted by : puneetmafia on Apr 26, 2012 - 09:00:05 AM

Waste from the Shoranur railway station dumped at the railway yard near platform seven is allegedly polluting the Bharathapuzha. The waste contaminates the water in the yard during the rain and this reaches the river from where water is pumped for the Shoranur drinking water supply scheme.

PCB directive
Environmentalist Prasad K. Shoranur said that when the local people had raised the issue earlier, the Kerala State Pollution Control Board had directed Railways to segregate the waste and burn the solid waste to prevent it from polluting the area and ultimately the river. However, the Railway authorities had failed to implement the direction of the PCB, and were dumping the waste from the station, including plastic and other non-degradable material, in the yard. The waste in the railway yard was not only polluting the surroundings but also the Bharathapuzha, the drinking water source of the Shoranur municipality, he said.
