A 23-year-old undertrial allegedly escaped from the custody of the Haryana Police from the Kashmere Gate Metro station around 5 pm on Monday. Police said the train’s doors closed on the rope — one end of which was tied to the handcuffs of undertrial Sandeep Kumar and the other end was tied to Head Constable Manoj’s belt — leaving the policeman out of the train.Another policeman — Constable Tejpal — was also accompanying Kumar, who had been taken for a hearing at a Chandigarh court. After arriving at Kashmere Gate ISBT, the policemen took Kumar to the Metro station, police said.According to police, the personnel were to take the Metro to the HUDA City Centre station, and then take Kumar to Bhondsi Jail.Police said Sandeep got on to the train first, but the two policemen could not. As the train began to move, Head Constable Manoj — still tied to Sandeep with the rope — was forced to run alongside on the platform. He ultimately managed to untie the rope from his belt, but the train left with the undertrial, police said.Police suspect Kumar kept his handcuffed hands under a shawl that was draped around him, and escaped before checks began at the next station.DCP (Railways) Sanjay Bhatia said a case had been registered. Police were also going through the CCTV footage from the Metro stations.Closing Metro doors spring back if they detect a round object at least 19 mm in diameter. A flat object with a minimum width of 15 mm is also detected by the doors. The rope evidently escaped. |
