Lucknow: The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Uttar Pradesh will now videograph passengers in reserved compartments from the point where the train originates.

This is being done to maintain an identification directory for reference in case of a crime during the journey.

According to DGP of GRP Rizwan Ahmad, a pilot project has been launched for close-circuit television coverage of platforms in Lucknow and Moradabad divisions and the results, so far, have been encouraging.

“The miscreants will also know that they have been caught by the video camera and if they try to create trouble, they can be easily identified,” Ahmad said.

The department is negotiating with the railway authorities to extend the project to other divisions in the state.

The DGP said on Monday that the GRP has already been instructed to paste stickers inside the compartments having the cell phone numbers of the in charges of all the GRP stations that fall on the route of the particular train.

The stickers will also carry phone numbers of the GRP control at the GRP headquarters in Lucknow which can be contacted by passengers in time of emergency.

Ahmad added that these steps were being taken in view of increasing incidents of crime, particularly those related to women passengers, on train journeys.
