The Shimoga District Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SDCCI) has urged the Department of Railways to upgrade amenities for passengers at Old Railway Station near Vidya Nagar in the city.

“More than 50 per cent of passengers from the city and from Holehonnur and surrounding villages use this station. Unfortunately, amenities for passengers here are in bad state. The Department should upgrade the amenities here at the earliest,” member of SDCCI K.V. Vasanth Kumar has said in a press release.

The chamber has urged the department to extend the newly introduced Mysore-Shimoga passenger train up to Talaguppa. If the train service is extended up to Talaguppa, by boarding this train, people of Sagar bound for Bangalore can catch the Hubli-Bangalore inter-city train at Birur.

On the traffic problem at the railway-level crossing on Holehonnur Road near Vidya Nagar, the chamber has said that an underpass should be constructed there to ensure smooth traffic.

It has demanded that the government hand over the land in its possession for construction of a 100-foot ring road in the city.
