HYDERABAD: The Union government on Monday announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the 37 passengers killed in the Tamil Nadu Express fire. Railway minister Mukul Roy, who was in Kolkata, said Rs 1 lakh would be given to those seriously injured in the fire. A railway spokesperson said Roy had also announced a compensation of Rs 25,000 to each of those who suffered minor injuries.

Describing the ex gratia as inadequate, Tirupati MP Chinta Mohan demanded that it be raised to Rs 10 lakh while YSR Congress and TDP leaders sought Rs 25 lakh ex gratia and a job to the families of the deceased.
