Tambaram will soon have adequate number of surveillance cameras to help prevent crimes including chain-snatching and theft, apart from monitoring the movement of suspicious persons. With over hundreds of thousands people visiting Tambaram, be it the busy Shanmugam Road Bazaar, bus terminus or railway station, the area has its fair share of crimes.According to police sources, a high-level meeting that was held recently took stock of the situation and a plan was chalked out to enhance security in the area. As part of the plan, high-tech surveillance cameras will soon be installed at all important spots in Tambaram. “We are still in the process of identifying key locations to install the cameras. It will be done soon. The cameras will be operational 24 x 7, ” a senior police official told City Express. The cameras are likely to come up at the railway station, bus stops, market locations including Shanmugam Road, Rajaji Salai, Gandhi Salai and Muthuranga Mudali Street.Local residents, while welcoming the initiative, urged the authorities to improve visible policing to help prevent offences against women such as eve-teasing and chain-snatching. “Now, we see good patrolling. If this can still be improved, it will be useful to us,” said S Swaminathan, a Tambaram resident. Also, efforts should be taken to prevent “harassment and extortion” by a section of transgenders and anti-socials who target men during late hours near the railway station, he added. |
