Successful run of 162 year old steam locomotive EIR 21 was conducted by Southern rail on September 10 from Chennai Egmore to Kodambakkam which was witnessed by huge Public. This revived steam locomotive completed its run with one coach capable to ferry 60 passengers. EIR 21 looks similar to fairy queen. EIR 21 was withdrawn from service in 1909 and was kept exhibit at Jamalpur Workshop and Howrah station for more than 101 years until 2010. The first heritage run of EIR 21 was conducted on August 15, 2010 from Chennai Central to Avadi. Southern rail made huge efforts in restoration of EIR 21 as most parts of this engine was corroded during its long standing 100 years in sun and rain. Railway runs this engine with a maximum speed of 45kmph. |
