For the first time in India, the State Bharat Scouts and Guides of Southern Railway is organising a three-day workshop on millennium development goals (MDGs), which originated from the Millennium Declaration of the United Nations during its 50th anniversary.The workshop was inaugurated in the city on Thursday.The UN under Kofi Annan declared eight millennium development goals with 21 targets to be achieved by 2015. Around 193 member countries of the UN agreed to the declaration.In this regard, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) adopted the UN MDGs and is taking the initiative to encourage girls and women of all ages to participate in achieving the goals.The Southern Railway is the first team to organise such a workshop on MDGs. Indu Shalini, a guide who attended a SAARCII event in Pakistan in October this year, said, “In these three days MDGs such as promoting gender equality and empowering women, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, ensuring environmental sustainability will be discussed. We have to contribute substantially towards achieving at least a few of the goals.”Dr G Narayanan, Additional General Manager, Southern Railway and president, Southern Railway State Bharat Scouts and Guides inaugurated the workshop. More than 80 delegates participated in this workshop. |
