KOCHI: Southern Railway has decided to relocate 10 families from its quarters to pave the way for the construction of Kochi Metro and six families have sought the assistance of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for the same. Railways has to relocate 16 families before handing over their property near Ernakulam south station to DMRC.Ernakulam area manager L Ashok Kumar said: "The shifting of these quarters is necessary to facilitate works that have to be carried out immediately. We have 18 living quarters, two are used as office space," he said. The decision was taken after holding talks with employees residing in these quarters. As it is not possible for the railways to accommodate them in alternative facilities available near Ernakulam Junction, they have identified vacant places at Ernakulam north, Marshalling yard and Irumbanam to relocate them. While seeking the willingness of their staff to shift homes, railways had stated that they would not be forced to do so if they were unwilling and 'DMRC will have to make necessary arrangements'.According to railways, DMRC had earlier expressed willingness to accommodate these families at a location identified by the Metro authority. The railways took into consideration various concerns raised by the staff and their families. Kumar added that in the long run railway would have to provide around 3.14 acres for the Metro project. |
