Title - Security beefed up at railway stations in N’Bengal

Security was today beefed at different stations in north Bengal a day after some commuters damaged railway’s property protesting unavailability of services to Assam which is facing caste violence.
Railway Minister Mukul Roy sought intervention of Union Home minister P Chidambaram and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to restore traffic between Assam and rest of the country.
Mr Roy spoke to Mr Chidambaram and Mr Gogoi regarding the ongoing disruption of train movement in Assam and sought security and safe passage for commuters.
Commuters in Cooch Behar and New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri stations agitated over the disruption damaged railway property.
Eastern Railway today cancelled two vital trains- 12345 Up Howrah-Guwahati Saraighat and 15657 Up Sealdah-Guwahati Kamrup owing to late running of down trains.
Nearly 11 trains between New Bongaigaon in Assam and Alipurduar were cancelled and dozen of others were irregular in their movements yesterday due to violence in Assam.
The Railway Ministry apprised the Centre and the Assam Government of the difficulties being faced by the commuters with most of them remaining stranded in Assam and different parts of the country.
Mr Roy also told the authorities concerned to ensure safety of the passengers and smooth movement of trains to and from Assam.
He emphasised that the safety and security of the passengers was of uppermost concern and the movement of passenger trains in the affected areas will be monitored keeping in view this objective.
Mr Roy said the railways also was trying its best to regulate the train movements in view of the disturbances but requested for providing adequate security specially in the 54 kilometer stretch of badly-affected area between Srirampur ad Salakati Railway stations.
It was making efforts to position affected trains at bigger stations so that the stranded passengers could be provided with food, water and security.
Nearly 26 trains were cancelled and 37 regulated at various stations yesterday, resulting in trains running behind schedule.
