With much expectation Salem Railway Division started a day train from Erode – Salem – Chennai Egmore. This train was more of a special train on trial run to check whether there are enough passengers available on this route in the day time or not. Also there was a growing demand from common people and trading community for a day time train from Salem to Chennai Egmore via Attur. As of now railway is unable to find much patronage for this day time train. Hardly 20% seats are occupied on an average everyday which is far below from the expectations. With such numbers Railway cannot operate train daily from Salem to Chennai Egmore, which railway made clear yesterday. It was said that people who want to travel from Salem to destinations such as Villupuram, Melmaruvathur, Tindivanam, Chengalpattu, Tamabaram during the day time, are in compulsion to opt a bus which happens to be a costly affair. Railway expected a good patronage because a reserved ticket of train costs about Rs 145 from Salem to Chennai while unreserved Rs. 115. Meanwhile, various Attur-based organisations have urged the Railways to extend the train but it is for the railway to decide for how long it can continue the service. |
