‘Salem Railway Division’s earnings have gone up by a healthy 41.07 per cent since its inception in 2007, said Sujatha Jayaraj, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Division.After unfurling the National Tri-colour and accepting guard of honour given by Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel at the Independence Day celebrations here on Wednesday, the DRM said that the number of passengers handled by the Division had also gone up by 26.16 per cent and freight traffic increased by 26.5 per cent. “The number of train services has been increased from 115 to 133 per day,” she pointed out.During the current financial year, the gross earnings of the Division had increased by 9.17 per cent when compared to the corresponding period last year. The punctuality of train services is maintained at a staggering 92 per cent. The integrated security system at Coimbatore Railway Junction would start functioning in another 3 to 4 months’ time, she added“About Rs. 12 crore are being spent by Salem Division on passenger amenities such as improvement of retiring rooms and circulating area, video and electronic display boards, electronic chart display and coach guidance systems, provision of escalators and lifts at major stations such as Coimbatore, Salem, Erode, Tirupur, etc.,” she said.The extension of Bangalore-Salem link train up to Nagore, Coimbatore-Erode link to Salem and Mangalore-Palghat express train service to Coimbatore and the newly introduced Katpadi-Salem Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) services, had realised spontaneous support from the travelling public. |
