Commissioning of Central Railway’s new Rail Route Interlinking (RRI) at Nagpur Railway Station would affect train services around Nagpur on June 12-13, said DRM Brijesh Dixit on Friday. Dixit said RRI with a capacity for 533 signalled routes will replace the 34-year-old RRI having 369 routes. This will be bigger than the one at Kalyan that has 403 routes capacity, making Nagpur’s the biggest RRI in CR, he said.

During the two-day commissioning operation, however, passage of 36 trains through Nagpur would be affected with an overall mega-block of about 48 hours on two days, he said.

The present RRI plan was approved in 2004-05 but took a while before the complicated job of laying cables measuring a total of nearly 724 km had to be completed alongside continuous railway traffic at the busy station, Dixit said.

He said the advantage of the new RRI is the train passing on a route will get all points clear through an electronically-connected system and there would be no chance of another train railing on to the same line that will be locked for all other trains, ruling out accidents.

On June 12-13, many trains would be stopped at stations preceding Nagpur. Additional staff would provide passenger facilities during and passengers would be provided information on train schedules and timings, Dixit added.
